Adolfo is 2 years old and the youngest
sibling of four. He was diagnosed in July 2006
with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis,
a rare blood disease that is caused by an excess
of white blood cells called histiocytes. During
the second half of 2006 he received blood
transfusions and chemotherapy and in January
2007 he underwent a bone marrow transplant.
At the same time Adolfo was diagnosed, his
father Ignacio was diagnosed with Acute
Lymphoblastic Leukemia and was hospitalized
at St. Joseph's Hospital, across the street from
CHOC.
The family rents two bedrooms for $500 each -
one for Adolfo and his dad Ignacio, both
undergoing chemotherapy, and another for the
other three siblings and their mom, Maria. Given
their situation, this family was coming apart at
the seams as the mom struggled to find work,
support her ill husband and son and raise her
other three children. The money they borrowed
from friends and family was gone and they had no
where else to turn for assistance.
The de la Luz family turned to Miracles for Kids
for assistance. With combined support our
organization was able to provide through the
grant program and a separate campaign on behalf
of the family, Miracles for Kids was able to
significantly help this family ease their
financial burden during this difficult period.

Molly’s Kids Grant Program at CHOC
Miracles for Kids offers individual
family members or caregivers of patients at CHOC the opportunity to apply for financial
assistance through the
Molly’s
Kids Grant Program. Grants are awarded
to assist those demonstrating difficulty meeting
financial hurdles as a result of a patient’s
course of treatment at CHOC and are available to
all families demonstrating need.
