Baily was diagnosed in April 2006 with
Neuroblastoma, a cancer of the sympathetic
nervous system. A patient at CHOC, Baily
undergoes radiation treatment five days per week
in addition to other tests and treatments.
For the months after her diagnosis, Baily’s
parents had to drive to and from Corona each day
for her treatments. The daily trips, compounded
with exorbitant insurance co-payments and other
unplanned expenses, have taken a devastating
financial toll on the family. Normally bearable,
the dad’s minimal public school teaching salary
was suddenly much less than required for the
family to survive. The Spoonhower family asked
for assistance with their mortgage, the one
expense they could not avoid and the one expense
that was the most difficult to afford. With a
grant from the Molly’s Kids Grant Program, the
Spoonhower’s were able to hold onto their home
and focus their energy not on financially
worries, but on being with Baily when she needs
them the most.

Molly’s Kids Grant Program at CHOC
Miracles for Kids offers individual
family members or caregivers of patients at CHOC the opportunity to apply for financial
assistance through the
Molly’s
Kids Grant Program. Grants are awarded
to assist those demonstrating difficulty meeting
financial hurdles as a result of a patient’s
course of treatment at CHOC and are available to
all families demonstrating need.
