Fabian Garcia was diagnosed with a brain tumor in
August 2005 at 15-months-old. He immediately
began treatment at CHOC, where he underwent
numerous scans and tests and subsequently
several rounds of chemotherapy. In order to be
with her son, Fabian’s mother quit her. She also
cares for his three siblings – Jesse, 16, Jaelyn,
11 and Emiliano, 1.
Fabian and his family were residing in a motel
close to CHOC while he was undergoing treatment.
Though the motel was nearer to CHOC and less
expensive than their previous apartment, the
family knew it was not a viable long-term
solution for Fabian, who they hoped would be
going home soon and would need a secure
environment in which to live.
Knowing this, Fabian’s mom applied for a grant
through the Molly’s Grant Program at CHOC. She
shared her story with us and asked for help with
the first month’s payment on an apartment they
found near CHOC and within their monthly budget.
Miracles for Kids was touched by Fabian’s story
and with the help of our donors was able to
provide Fabian and his family with the funds
they needed for a place of their own. Fabian is
now home in his new apartment with his family
and doing well. He continues to come to CHOC
every day for treatment and the doctors monitor
his progress closely.

Molly’s Kids Grant Program at CHOC
Miracles for Kids offers individual
family members or caregivers of patients at CHOC the opportunity to apply for financial
assistance through the
Molly’s
Kids Grant Program. Grants are awarded
to assist those demonstrating difficulty meeting
financial hurdles as a result of a patient’s
course of treatment at CHOC and are available to
all families demonstrating need.
