Joshua was diagnosed in September 2006 with
Osteosarcoma, a cancer which was located in his
leg. His mother, Ava, a single parent of two
with one son stationed in Iraq, had to stop
working in order to support her son during his
treatment at CHOC.
During his treatment, it became clear to this
family that they would have to move from their
current apartment. Located on the second story
of a building, Joshua couldn’t walk up the
stairs on his own. And without access to an
elevator, Ava knew that she would not be able to
get him home each day. However, without an
income and limited support from extended family
members, Ava had no way to pay for the costs
associated with such a move. Thanks to the
assistance of the social workers at CHOC, Ava
and Joshua were told about the Miracles for Kids
Grant Program and they applied immediately for
assistance.
Miracles for Kids was able to assist Ava and her
son Joshua with affording a move to a new
apartment. Staff was also able linked Ava and
Joshua with one of our donors who was so moved
by their story that he provided an additional
donation which allowed Ava and Joshua to afford
the rent in their new home for a few months
while she figured out their long term plan.
