Juan is a 9-year-old boy who was diagnosed with
leukemia at a young age. A patient at CHOC, his
family spent several months with their child
while he underwent tests and treatments for his
disease. Juan also received a bone marrow
transplant in March 2005.
Although Juan is now home, his family continues
to accompany him to CHOC one to two times a
month for his clinic appointments. As laborers
at a local factory, the disruption in their work
schedule, compounded by sporadic layoffs due to
productivity dips, has resulted in a decrease in
income to the family. As a result, the family
found themselves in serious danger of eviction
from their apartment and in need of immediate
assistance.
With the help of their CHOC Social Services
Representative, Juan’s mother applied for
financial assistance through the Molly’s Kids
Grant Program and was approved. With our help,
they were able to cover the rental obligation in
their current apartment and keep their family in
their home
Today, Juan remains at home with this family. He
is doing amazingly well as a result of his bone
marrow transplant and we are hopeful that his
health will continue to strengthen over time.

Molly’s Kids Grant Program at CHOC
Miracles for Kids offers individual
family members or caregivers of patients at
CHOC the opportunity to apply for financial
assistance through the
Molly’s
Kids Grant Program. Grants are awarded
to assist those demonstrating difficulty meeting
financial hurdles as a result of a patient’s
course of treatment at CHOC and are available to
all families demonstrating need.
