Sophia is a two-year-old girl who was diagnosed in
2005 with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH),
a rare disorder primarily affecting young
children at a very early age. A patient at CHOC
since last August, Sophia has undergone numerous
tests and treatments in order to fight her
disease. In early 2006 Sophia also received a
bone marrow transplant.
When the Colby family found out that the
wonderful news that Sophia was going to be
released to go home after several months in the
hospital, they knew they would need to renovate
their home to provide a sanitary environment for
their daughter. However, with mom not working to
be by Sophia’s side and the family surviving on
one income, they did not know how they would be
able to afford the renovations needed to keep
Sophia’s environment safe.
With the assistance of their CHOC Social
Services Representative, they applied for a
grant through the Molly’s Kids Program at CHOC
and were approved. They used the grant to
purchase two new air filtration systems, install
new flooring and make other adjustments
necessary to ensure Sophia a safe environment to
manage her health.
Miracles for Kids is pleased to announce that
after almost 100 days at CHOC, little Sophia was
able to go home.
